ShiroOne‘s journey into graffiti began with her love for drawing, which she cultivated from childhood. Born with complete deafness in her right ear due to contracting the mumps virus and frequently moving due to her father’s job, she found comfort in creating her own character, Mimi. “Drawing was always my escape. It was my way of expressing myself when words weren’t enough.” She started spray painting in the late ’90s, already immersed in hip-hop and dance, inspired by graffiti she’d seen in music videos. Growing up in an old harbor town in Japan, she and her friends painted walls in broad daylight without complaints—fishermen even complimented their work. Lacking knowledge, internet access, or proper tools, they experimented with spray caps from hair sprays and insect repellents, gradually developing their techniques.
